If I told you your music sucks what would you say? If I told you to try again with that hit how would you feel?
The main key to success is honest critique. The best advice you can receive pertaining to your music is from a stranger. Most friends or support team just want to see you win and happy. So like its hard to tell your wife her cooking bad, same goes for them telling you your music sucks.
That's when it goes back to everyone needs a good solid manager if they want to progress to the next level. I've met people at levels where they don't and won't talk to an artist regardless the level of your success. Most artists are cocky when they get just a small buzz. Their lack of understanding the market regardless their buzz is why most artist don't last.
Regardless what type of song you make and how hot it is there should always be cons and pros. Meaning it might be a perfect club banger but its terrible to relax to due to too much bass. With positive direct feedback like that it would ensure you that you make an album universal to everyone which is what labels and companies look for. Universal meaning a little something that everyone can jam out to. That way you corner the entire market instead of focusing on a certain aspect like hood or streets. That's why people drops mix-tapes in order to hit a certain demographic, plus a way to see majority of your money without having to pay exclusive rights for beats.
You want people around you to give you their honest opinions so you know they have your best interest at heart. If they lying to you telling you what you want to hear, that mean they in it for personal gain. By them being honest they could careless if you're an asshole and fire them. Its better them than a fan. If your team hears something wack you can fix it. If a fan hears something wack, you might just lost a fan.
All and all, keep honest individuals around you at all times. Don't be afraid to take chances with your music and think outside the box. If you think I left something out or was wrong about anything feel free to sound off in comments. If you enjoyed it and something i said helped you sound off in comments. Be sure to leave city and state so I know where you checking me out from.
